Eugene M. "Tobey" Huntzinger, 77, of Schuylkill Haven, formerly of Auburn and a resident of Seton Manor, Orwigsburg, passed away Monday at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street.
Born in Reading, June 25, 1937, he was a son of the late Eugene F. and Harriet Morrison Huntzinger.
He was a graduate of Auburn High School, Class of 1955, and had worked for the former Orwigsburg Paper Box Co., Auburn Brick Yard, Bound Brook Bearing Corp., Auburn, and was last employed by Schuylkill Haven Bleach and Dye until retiring in 1998.
Eugene was a member of First United Methodist Church, Schuylkill Haven. He volunteered his time for Schuylkill Haven Council of Churches Food Pantry, as well as the First United Methodist Church food pantry, known as "The Vineyard."
Eugene also belonged to Schuylkill Haven Senior Citizens Organization and Auburn Game and Fish Association.
He was a history buff and was particularly interested in the Schuylkill Canal and the Civil War. Eugene was a charter member of Schuylkill Haven Area Historical Society and a former member of Northern Berks-Southern Schuylkill Historical Association in Port Clinton. He devoted many hours with curator Vincent Fisher, transforming the old schoolhouse in Port Clinton into the Canal and Transportation Museum.
He was the husband of Jean E. Long Huntzinger, whom he married June 17, 1967. He is also survived by a son, Mitchell S. Huntzinger, Kitty Hawk, N.C.; a daughter, Tanya S. Ehrenfried and her husband, Jonathan, Nescopek; two grandchildren, Ryan and Kaitlyn; cousins.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside memorial service at 10 a.m. Thursday at Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven.
