Harold D. "Hal" Butts, Jr.

October 31, 1929 — December 12, 2014

Harold D. "Hal" Butts Jr., 85, of Pottsville, passed away Friday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Allentown.

Born in Pottsville, Oct. 31, 1929, he was a son of the late Harold D. Sr. and Cecil A. Boyer Butts.

Harold graduated from Pottsville High School in 1947. He served in the Army as a sergeant in the Korean War.

He was of the Protestant faith.

Harold was a member of the Pottsville police force for 30 years, retiring in 1982 as the chief of police.

He then served 10 years as a sheriff in the Schuylkill County Sheriff Office. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 44.

Surviving are a sister, Darlene, wife of Joseph Culley, Pottsville; a brother, Walter J. Butts, husband of Jenn, Escondido, Calif.; a niece and a nephew.

A Celebration of Life funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Geschwindt-Stabingas Funeral Home Inc., 25 E. Main St., Schuylkill Haven, with the Rev. Brian Reading officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. At the family's request, memorial donations may be sent to Pottsville DARE Program, 401 N. Centre St., Pottsville, PA 17901.

Interment with military honors will be conducted at Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven.
