Richard G. Hartzell, 83, of Orwigsburg, passed away Wednesday, July 21, at Geisinger St. Luke's Medical Center, Orwigsburg.
Born in Bloomsburg, on May 2, 1938, he was a son of the late Christina (Gallen) and William Hartzell.
He was the husband of Margaret "Peggy" (Sutton) Hartzell.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Church on Christ Summer Hill, Auburn.
After Dick graduated from Scott Township High School, he joined the Air Force. Upon returning home, he attended Drexel University, where he received his bachelor's degree in engineering. He then worked at Sun Oil Co. as a special project engineer until retiring.
Dick's happiest times were spent with friends and family. He enjoyed tending his garden, fishing, watching the Phillies play and watching hummingbirds come to his many feeders.
Richard was preceded in death by a son, Richard Jr.; a brother, William Hartzell; and a sister-in-law, Martha Palme.
In addition to his wife, Peggy, Dick is survived by a son, Andrew Hartzell, husband of Marlene, Ambler; a daughter, Christina Gogel, Orwigsburg; granddaughters, Gabriella, Giavana and Serina Hartzell; sisters, Patricia Cerritelli, Newtown Square, and Sue Fox, Bloomsburg; brothers-in-law, John Sutton, husband of Kay, and Robert Palme; many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Summer Hill, Auburn, with Pastor Kenneth McDowell officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held at 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. At the family's request, memorial donations may be forwarded to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 1235 Summer Hill Road, Auburn, PA 17922 or Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, 1700 Hawk Mountain Road, Kempton, PA 19529. Internment will be private at the convenience of the family.
