Roger Edward Bailey

February 3, 1936 — January 30, 2022

Roger Edward Bailey, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Pottsville with his son, daughter, and his dog Squiggy at his side.

Roger was born in Philadelphia on February 3, 1936, the only child of Samuel E. Bailey and Mildred V. (Ware) Bailey. He attended Philadelphia schools growing up and inspired by his father’s military service during World War II, joined the Army after graduating high school. While always proud of his military service, basic training was so rough that Roger humorously swore for decades no one would ever make him run again after he got out of the Army. After completing his military service, Roger attained a Bachelor‘s Degree in Business Administration from Peirce Business School through the G.I. bill.

After working in the Philadelphia banking industry in for several years, Roger met the love of his life, Helene McAnally, and later married her in the Summer of 1969. After their children were born, the family moved to Pottsville in the early 1980’s when Roger started a banking job there. A believer in community service, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Salvation Army and made many life lasting friendships with them while helping with their projects. Roger also organized the “Our Gang” community bus trips during the late 1980’s, something he was proud of.

Roger and Helene enjoyed many trips and cruises together in the U.S. and different places over the world, especially Ireland. They treasured the multiple family Christmas parties they shared with their friends in town every year. A lifetime suffering Philadelphia Eagles fan, Roger was pleasantly surprised to have lived long enough to see them finally win a Super Bowl.

Preceding him in death are his parents and his wife Helene, who was taken from us too soon in 2007. Roger is survived by his children Michael Bailey and Amy (Bailey) Eckert, husband of Steven, both of Pottsville.

Roger didn’t want any funeral services for himself. He would want people to find positive worthy community causes to volunteer with. Memorials in his name may be given to the DAWGS Prison Program.
