Virginia "Ginny" Long, 92, of Pottsville, passed away Sunday at her daughter's residence surrounded by her loved ones.
Born in Dauphin, Feb. 27, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Ralph B. and Elsie M. Heberling Kennedy.
She was the widow of James Long, who passed away in 1994.
Ginny was a member of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, Llewellyn.
She was the manager of the toy department at the former Sauers' Hardware and Toys, Pottsville, for more than 30 years. She later worked at the former Stuhlman's Paper, currently Central Penn Paper, Pottsville, for more than 40 years, prior to her retirement.
She was a graduate of William Penn High School, Class of 1942, and shortly thereafter enlisted in the Navy. She served during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947.
Ginny was a charter member of Women in Military Service for America. She is recognized for her service during WWII, where her photo is on display at their memorial in Washington, D.C.
She is survived by a daughter, Jodi Sweet, wife of Jeff, Orwigsburg; sons, Gary Long, husband of Patricia, and William Long, husband of Diane, both of Bethel; grandchildren, Allison, Erik and Bryce Long; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Ivah Layerle, Kenner, La.; nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, Llewellyn, with the Rev. Robert C. Reier officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment will be private at convenience of the family.
